I felt like Cinder-Fucking-ella when I opened the shoe box that had been

delivered from Nordstrom’s and seen the clear Jimmy Choo stilettos that was trimmed in gold. The gold slip-dress designed by Versace was even more beautiful draped over my curves than it had been in the Nordstrom’s plastic. A perfect fit. Stay Ready had outdone himself. I couldn’t imagine the night getting any better and it hadn’t even started yet.

The antique maple grandfather clock in the hallway chimed exactly eight times

when I heard my doorbell sing throughout the walls of my brownstone. For the sake of asking, I asked, “Who is it?”

“Your knight and shining armor.” Stay Ready replied. The sweet scents of

bergamot, black pepper, and cinnamon leaves greeted me when I opened the door. Standing next to a cream CTS Cadillac dressed in a cream and peanut butter pinstripe suit classic, tailored by Armani and Stacy Adams on his feet, Stay Ready displayed his signature natural thug as he peeped from under a peanut butter brim.

“You are beautiful,” he said to me as he stuck his arm out.

I took his arm, “You don’t look so bad yourself.”

Keith Sweat’s new CD, Just Me, played until we pulled into a parking lot on Utica

Avenue, Next to a building that looks deserted. That’s until we walked in.

“Congratulations!” Out of nowhere the lights popped on and the teachers and

students from Finishing Touch, Nikki, Jeremy Xavier, Mamie and Billion appeared. Balloons fell from the ceiling, where a banner that read “Congratulations Million” hung.

I couldn’t respond when Stay Ready leaned over to me and said, “Congrats.”

Tears welled up in my eyes.

Nikki hugged me and whispered, “You didn’t have a clue, did you?”

I hadn’t had a clue. I had been with Nikki at the salon earlier, Xavier had picked

up Mamie and Billion that afternoon, supposedly for a game. He kissed my forehead and said, so you’re ready to make a million, huh?”

“You know it,” I replied.

Jeremy shook his head at me then gave me another bowed encore.

I smiled. “Five big ones.” He winked at me and let my teachers and classmates,

that I barely paid attention to, hug and congratulate me.

“I’ve never had anyone do anything like this for me.”

As Stay Ready ushered me to a long table he told me, this is only the beginning.

At that point, the music stopped and the room fell silent.

“Could the founder of Sigma Rho Psi, the first beauty and barber school

fraternity and sorority, Mr. Shia Noriega please come to the floor?”

Stay Ready stood, in a loud rugged voice he demanded, “Bros to da flo’.”

I hadn’t realized it until the men started toward the floor that they were all

dressed exactly like Stay Ready. Nor did I know that Stay Ready was the founder of Finishing Touch’s Fraternity and Sorority.

Standing in the middle of men, Stay Ready broke the silence, “Ladies of Sigma

Rho Psi!”

Women all around the room, dressed in gold floor length gowns chirped like birds then chimed, “Chi Rho Chi.”

When the ladies stopped chirping the men barked, “Sigma Rho Psi holding the

“Psi” longer than all the other Greek alphabets.
